Voki
What is it?
A Voki is a "personalized speaking avatar" you customize and publish to your website, wiki or blog. Click the play buttons to hear the voki talk. How you can use it: Students can use it to review a book or to speak as a character from a book or to give a response to a book (play the dog below). Teachers can use it to motivate students and to encourage creativity when doing projects. You can post messages and reminders using a voki on your website. The girl voki, below, gives a message about summer reading & the background is my library. I posted it on the library website at the end of the school year. |

Students can generate word clouds to describe characters, setting, mood or theme of the story. Librarians could make a wordle of popular authors: the 100 most banned authors, Caldecott winners etc. |

Poll Everywhere
What is it?
Poll Everywhere enables you to create an online poll. How do you use it? Students love to take polls and teachers could use this tool to begin class discussion--for students to take a stand and then support their answer with textual evidence. Which character was the most admirable? Which scene was the most important? In the example at the left, each statement is partially true, but the discussion would be why a student selected that statement over the others. In so doing, they are sharing their knowledge of the text and making personal connections to the text as well as our society. |
